I noticed, that the User Agent 007 Pepper is tracking Apples WebKit version. I think that for the “ordinary user” the Safari version would be more meaningful. I’ve seen, how this could be changed in the source, but was wondering what the reason was, tracking the WebKit version in the first place.

Apple doesn’t provide the familiar Safari version in the user agent string. So a reference table would need to be created and maintained—every time a new Safari was released you would need to download and update UA007—which is not acceptable to me as a developer or as a user with multiple Mint installs.

Hm, I see the problem. If Apple could guarantee, that this XML file below is always available, you could take the input from there. But I’m not sure, if this file - although perfectly up to date - will be maintained forever… http://developer.apple.com/internet/safari/uamatrix.xml

Hmm, where’d you come across that file? Is it intended to be an ever-present lookup for Safari versions?

That appears to be an ever-present resource from the developer article. You would think that would get more attention.
