Slow loading

Hello.

I have several mint installs and I’m happy. However, one of my installs (the main one) seems to load the administration interface rather slowly.

I’ve not got too many peppers installed and the database settings seem reasonable (25mb or 5 weeks).

Any suggestions on where to find a possible bottle neck or problem?

Thanks for any help :)

A good place to start would be to visit /mint/?benchmark and check the loading times.

What would be a bad benchmark? I’m getting between .22 and .25 seconds.

The key is to look at which Pepper or function is taking the most time (you need to disable “Stagger Pane Loading” in your Preferences to get an accurate measure). If any one process is taking .2 seconds (the majority of the time), then that’s your bottleneck. Sometimes simply leaving one pane on a different default tab speeds things up significantly.

Ah yes. 19.9803 seconds is my current loading time! I can see that Secret Crush is taking 15 seconds to load itself:

15.4132 display(Secret Crush : Crushes : Most Recent)

It seems that the call to gethostbyaddr(); is taking up most of the time:

5.0992 gethostbyaddr(86.13.145.15)

There’s several 5 second entries and a couple of 1 second entries.

I’m guessing the solution to this would be to uninstall secret crush and reinstall or totally remove it?

gethostbyaddr() is a native PHP function whose performance is limited by the speed of your DNS. If it is performing slowly, try enabling “Stagger Pane Loading” in your Mint Preferences, then at least only that pane will be sluggish.

Beyond that, there’s nothing Mint can do to speed it up (it already caches previously encountered ip lookups so it only has to use gethostbyaddr() once per new ip address).

If speed is still an issue you could leave the Crushes pane on the Searches tab when you’re not looking at it. Otherwise you might want to uninstall Secret Crush (or contact your host to see if there’s anything they can do to tune their DNS for faster responses).

Thanks. Setting staggered panes worked. I’ll look into the DNS issue with my host.
